The Chemung County Department of Aging & Long Term Care is hosting events to celebrate Older Americans Month. The first event, titled “A Day to Remember,” will take place on May 9th at Notre Dame High School in Elmira, New York. This Senior Prom Celebration aims to bring together older adults and the high school’s Class of 2026 for a day filled with music and dancing. Greg Olsen, Director of the NYS Office for the Aging, and Rebecca Preve, Executive Director of the Association on Aging in New York, are expected to attend.

Another event is scheduled for May 14th at New Beginnings United Methodist Church in Elmira. During this celebration, the department will present the 2025 Distinguished Volunteers of the Year Awards and read a proclamation by Chemung County Executive Chris Moss designating May as Older Americans Month in Chemung County.

Older Americans Month has been celebrated since 1963 and is led by a federal agency under the Administration for Community Living. The theme for 2025 is “Flip the Script on Aging,” which encourages society to challenge stereotypes about aging.

Beth Stranges from the Department of Aging can be contacted at 737-5520 for more information.
