Today, Congressman Nick Langworthy expressed his support for the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s reconciliation bill. The legislation is scheduled for markup on May 13 at 2:00 pm.
Langworthy stated, “After five months of tough negotiations and in-depth discussions with key stakeholders, the House Energy and Commerce Committee has delivered a bold reconciliation bill that achieves our top priorities: protecting Medicaid for those who genuinely need it, advancing American energy independence, and ending the hemorrhaging of taxpayer dollars through waste, fraud, and abuse.”
As the only Republican from New York on the committee, Langworthy emphasized his commitment to rural hospitals and access to care. He noted, “From day one, I made it clear that I would fight relentlessly to protect rural hospitals and safeguard access to care—and as the only Republican from New York serving on the Energy and Commerce Committee, I was proud to help lead that charge alongside my colleagues and the White House.”
The congressman highlighted the bill’s focus on fiscal responsibility. “This bill strengthens the social safety net while restoring fiscal responsibility,” he said. He also warned of potential system failures without action: “Let’s be clear: if we do nothing, the system goes broke.”
Langworthy advocated for work requirements for certain adults receiving assistance. He mentioned President Bill Clinton’s policies as a precedent: “That’s why this legislation includes commonsense work requirements for able-bodied adults without dependents—just as President Bill Clinton enacted in the 1990s.”
Additionally, Langworthy addressed immigration concerns related to Medicaid. “We are also removing illegal aliens from the Medicaid rolls,” he stated.
He criticized opposition from Democrats like Chuck Schumer: “Unfortunately, powerful Democrats like Chuck Schumer are already resorting to lies, fear-mongering, and deception to protect the failed status quo.”
Langworthy concluded by emphasizing his party’s efforts toward reform. “While Democrats and their special interest allies cling to bloated bureaucracy and broken programs,” he said, “we are delivering real solutions.”
