A nurse at UHS, Kelly Buman, has been recognized as the February recipient of the DAISY Award, a program that acknowledges nurses for their exceptional care and compassion. Kelly, who works in the Emergency Department, was nominated by a colleague for her outstanding assistance in a challenging situation involving a complex patient in the ICU.
According to the nomination letter, Kelly took over the care of the patient, allowing her colleague to gather necessary resources and additional staff support. This support continued until the patient was stable enough to be transferred to the ICU. Even after the transfer, Kelly remained instrumental in managing patient care as new arrivals required attention.
The nominating colleague expressed deep appreciation, stating, “In a line of work that can be so overwhelming at times, both physically and mentally, Kelly was my rock. I cannot express my gratitude and thanks enough for her dedication to her coworkers and the patients she cares for. I am more than proud to work alongside Kelly. Kelly is truly one of a kind.”
The DAISY Award, which stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem, is an international program that recognizes nurses for their exceptional care. It was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who passed away from an autoimmune disease in 1999. The award started at UHS in April 2021 and accepts nominations from anyone in the organization, including patients and staff, via a form at NYUHS.org.
