In response to the increasing frequency and severity of weather events, a free emergency preparedness training session will take place in Chemung County. Governor Kathy Hochul, partnering with the Southport Volunteer Fire Department, is applying the New York State Citizen Preparedness Corps Training Program to equip residents with essential skills to handle disasters.

The training is scheduled for Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at 6:00 PM at the Southport Volunteer Fire Department, located at 1001 Carl Street, Elmira, NY 14904.

Participants will be instructed on managing natural and man-made disasters by developing a family emergency plan, recognizing potential threats in New York, and stocking an emergency supply kit effectively.

Households attending will receive a free Citizen Preparedness Kit, designed to support the establishment and maintenance of their emergency preparedness plans.

As part of a larger statewide undertaking, this program aims to enhance the readiness of residents, ensuring they can better protect themselves, their families, and their communities. Those interested must register by visiting www.prepare.ny.gov.

“Every household that attends will receive a free Citizen Preparedness Kit to assist in developing and maintaining their emergency preparedness plan.”

“This initiative is part of a statewide effort to ensure residents are better prepared to protect themselves, their families, and their communities.”
