Today, Congressman Nick Langworthy announced that Chemung County has received a grant of $248,815 from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) for the Chemung Canal Connector. The funding will be used to create a 7-mile link between the Lackawanna Trail and the Catharine Valley Trail.
The connector trail is designed to direct pedestrian and bicycle traffic through Elmira Heights and Elmira, which is expected to boost local tourism. This project will extend into a continuous 29-mile trail connecting to the larger 580-mile Finger Lakes Trail System. By enhancing recreational access, it aims to draw new visitors, stimulate local economic activity, attract businesses, increase property values, and support tourism and outdoor recreation in the region.
“This investment in the Chemung Canal Connector is a win for our community, our economy, and our quality of life. By linking key trail systems through Elmira and Elmira Heights, we’re opening the door to thousands of new visitors, stronger small businesses, and a more vibrant outdoor recreation economy,” said Congressman Langworthy. “I’m proud to support a project that will benefit Chemung County for generations to come.”
