Guthrie Corning Hospital has been awarded an “A” grade for safety by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit focused on patient safety. The Leapfrog Group assigns grades ranging from “A” to “F” to general hospitals across the United States, based on performance in over 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries, and infections, alongside the systems implemented to prevent such incidents.
“We are proud but not surprised to be setting the bar for patient care nationally,” stated Paul VerValin, President of Guthrie Corning Hospital and EVP/COO of The Guthrie Clinic. He emphasized that this accolade reflects the high standards and experienced caregivers at the hospital, ensuring safe and quality care for patients.
Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, remarked, “Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade reflects enormous dedication to patient safety.” She congratulated Guthrie Corning Hospital, lauding its leadership, clinicians, staff, and volunteers for fostering a patient-first culture.
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade program is unique in its exclusive focus on preventable medical errors, infections, and injuries, which result in more than 500 patient deaths daily in the U.S. The program is peer-reviewed, transparent, and accessible to the public, with updates provided biannually.
