The Guthrie Clinic was named a recipient of the 2026 Modern Healthcare Innovator Award on April 13, recognizing its Pulse Center as an innovative model for transforming rural healthcare delivery.
The award honors organizations that advance healthcare through measurable innovation. Guthrie received this distinction for its Pulse Center, which integrates virtual nursing, virtual intensive care unit support, telesitting, centralized telemetry, transfer coordination and remote patient monitoring to improve access and quality across its two-state rural service area.
Guthrie developed the Pulse Center model to address challenges faced by rural healthcare systems nationwide. These include limited access to specialty care, workforce support and retention issues, and providing timely care close to home. Since launching the Pulse Center, Guthrie reports millions of dollars in annual savings and more than 10,000 hours of bedside nurse time returned. The system also saw an average reduction of 135 minutes in emergency department-to-inpatient bed placement time. Telesitting led to an 87.5% decrease in major-injury falls while virtual nursing reduced pressure injuries by over 20 percent and helped ensure that more than 45 percent of patients are discharged within seventy-five minutes systemwide.
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania highlighted the Pulse Center in its Rural Health Transformation Plan as a scalable approach to addressing workforce shortages and disparities in rural communities.

Since 2023 Guthrie has expanded the Pulse Center’s services with enterprise alarm monitoring, paramedicine support case management services remote patient monitoring and centralized security alerting; further expansions are planned including virtual emergency department triage centralized scheduling home health support showing continued flexibility for broader adoption.
