Jennifer Plohetski has been named the November recipient of the DAISY Award at UHS, a recognition program that honors nurses for exceptional care and compassion. The award presentation included cinnamon rolls, a symbolic gesture tied to Patrick Barnes, whose experience inspired the creation of the DAISY Award.

Plohetski was nominated by a family member of a patient who described an incident involving his son, who has a history of mental illness. During a hospital visit, the son experienced a mental health episode that led to security being called. Despite being off shift, Plohetski engaged with him and persuaded him to leave peacefully.

“She was a great interactive listener and showed genuine interest in him. What was so amazing was how she got him talking about the seasons, which one he liked and why,” wrote the family member in his letter. “She was off shift and took the time to help him (and me) which resulted in a peaceful ride to his apartment where he settled in for the night.”

The DAISY Award is an international program established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died from complications related to ITP in 1999. The foundation recognizes nurses for their skillful and compassionate care.

At UHS, nurses can be nominated by anyone who observes or experiences extraordinary care. Nominations are submitted through an online form on nyuhs.org, where nominators also indicate which UHS value—Compassion, Trust, Respect, Teamwork, or Innovation—the nurse demonstrated.

Questions regarding nominations can be directed via email to daisy@nyuhs.org.
