John Olmstead, MD, FACS, has been named one of Becker’s Hospital Review’s 2026 Chief Medical Officers to Know, according to a March 9 announcement from The Guthrie Clinic. Olmstead is a general and breast surgeon who also serves as chief medical officer at Guthrie Corning Hospital.
The recognition highlights the important role that chief medical officers play in ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality care within hospitals and health systems. Becker’s list honors leaders who are advancing standards through innovative quality improvement and safety initiatives.
Becker’s Hospital Review cited improved safety scores at Guthrie Cortland Hospital during Olmstead’s tenure. The publication linked these achievements to his support for interdisciplinary rounding, which helps strengthen coordination of care for patients.
The review also praised Olmstead for promoting sound clinical strategy, standardized pathways of care, regulatory readiness, and multidisciplinary alignment among physicians, nurses, and the broader care team around shared priorities in quality improvement, risk management, and sustainability.
Becker’s noted that Olmstead demonstrates shared ownership of safety and quality by making weekly rounds across departments while continuing his clinical work as a breast surgeon.
This recognition places a spotlight on leadership efforts at Guthrie Corning Hospital and reflects ongoing commitments to patient safety and coordinated care.
