Congressman Nick Langworthy held a press conference in Elmira, New York, to discuss the Energy Choice Act. The proposed legislation aims to prevent states or local governments from prohibiting connections or modifications of energy services based on the type or source of energy.
Langworthy criticized Governor Kathy Hochul and Albany Democrats for their policies on gas usage in buildings, arguing that such measures increase energy costs and compromise reliable energy sources. “Governor Kathy Hochul and Democrats in Albany are hurting New Yorkers with their relentless war on American energy,” said Congressman Langworthy. He emphasized that the Energy Choice Act seeks to counteract these trends and secure the nation’s energy future.
The Independent Oil and Gas Association of New York (IOGANY) expressed support for the bill. They highlighted concerns about increased utility bills due to green energy initiatives like the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) and Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA). IOGANY questioned whether emission goals could be met without compromising reliable, cost-effective energy. “Cleaner air is a wonderful objective but at what cost and impact on our standard of living,” they stated.
Terence O’Brien, Co-Executive Director of NYS PHCC, also backed the legislation, noting its importance for maintaining adequate power and heating across New York. He argued that restrictive local and state laws threaten energy supply reliability. “This law would allow for the use of not only renewable gas and hydrogen but also other fuels like bio biodiesel, all made in New York,” he said.
