Congressman Nick Langworthy (NY-23) held press conferences in Owego and Elmira to draw attention to his Energy Choice Act, a legislative proposal aimed at preventing state and local governments from banning certain energy sources in new construction. The events were organized as a response to Governor Kathy Hochul and state lawmakers’ policy banning natural gas in new buildings across New York.
Langworthy criticized the ban, arguing that it would increase energy costs for families and undermine reliable power during extreme weather conditions. He stated, “I am proud to lead the fight to ban the bans and defend New Yorkers’ right to affordable, reliable energy. Hochul’s radical agenda will not only drive-up costs for families already struggling, but also eliminate a safe, dependable energy source that keeps homes heated and people protected. This is becoming a dangerous trend in blue states across the country, and my Energy Choice Act will end these costly bans, safeguard consumer choice, and secure America’s energy future.”
The congressman was joined by municipal and state legislators, along with representatives from the Southern Tier Homebuilders Association and the Builders Exchange of the Southern Tier, who expressed opposition to the statewide policy on natural gas restrictions.
The Energy Choice Act would prohibit government entities from blocking or limiting energy service connections or installations based on fuel type.
