Assemblyman Phil Palmesano, representing Corning, has joined forces with Assemblyman Robert Smullen from the Mohawk Valley and Adirondacks, along with other assembly minority colleagues and community activists. They are advocating for the passage of the “Fentanyl Fathers and Mothers Act” (A.8540), which Palmesano co-sponsors. This proposed legislation mandates the Department of Education to create and implement a comprehensive program on fentanyl education, awareness, and recognition across all schools in New York State.
Palmesano emphasized the importance of addressing fentanyl-related issues: “Every death from fentanyl is one too many. Drug addiction and overdoses are not a political issue; they affect everyone, and we, as legislators, have a duty to protect the children of this state. Education on fentanyl and awareness of the problem is one of the most powerful tools we have at our disposal. That is why I am proud to support this bill and urge my colleagues to move to pass it before the end of session.”
