Rebecca Blowers has been named the October recipient of the DAISY Award at UHS, a recognition given to nurses who demonstrate exceptional care and compassion. The award was presented to Blowers in acknowledgment of her dedication to patients and support for her colleagues.
Blowers was nominated by a colleague who highlighted her commitment to patient care, noting that she takes time to understand each patient and works to make their treatments as comfortable as possible. The nomination letter described Blowers’ efforts beyond direct patient care, including coordinating with UHS Specialty Pharmacy for medication delivery, organizing weekly provider meetings, and assisting front desk staff with appointments and patient communications.
“Rebecca is the MVP of New Horizons Outpatient, and our office—ESPECIALLY our MAT program, would not run nearly as effectively as it does without Rebecca’s efficiency, guidance, compassion, innovation, and intuition,” the colleague wrote in the nomination letter. “Our patients value the care that she provides so much. She takes the time to get to know them before they come in for their monthly medication injections; she treats them like people—not just a number.”
The DAISY Award is an international program established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after his death from complications related to ITP in 1999. The foundation was created as a way for Barnes’ family to publicly thank nurses for their compassionate care during his illness. More information about the award can be found at DAISYFoundation.org.
UHS began participating in the DAISY Award program in April 2021. Nominations can be submitted by anyone within the organization who witnesses extraordinary nursing care using a form available on nyuhs.org. The form allows nominators to share stories about nominees and identify which core UHS value—such as Compassion or Teamwork—the nurse demonstrated.
