Assemblyman Phil Palmesano has reminded residents about the upcoming RecruitNY weekend on April 26 and 27, encouraging participation in the statewide initiative. The event invites community members to explore volunteer opportunities at local firehouses. The number of active volunteer firefighters has decreased by 33% over the last 20 years, currently totaling approximately 80,000 members. Palmesano highlighted that volunteer firefighters contribute significant economic savings, amounting to $4.7 billion annually for taxpayers.

Coinciding with RecruitNY weekend is the Firefighters Association of the State of New York’s (FASNY) “Light Up NY Red” campaign. This initiative encourages residents to display red lights at their homes as a show of support for firefighters throughout the state. Palmesano extended an invitation to potential recruits and supporters to engage in these activities.

“Local volunteer firefighters and emergency workers are the backbone of rural communities, but unfortunately, over the past couple of decades, they have seen their numbers dwindle, with some stations even having to shut down,” Palmesano noted. He emphasized the importance of raising awareness through events like RecruitNY and urged those interested in fire service to attend. “Being a firefighter takes a dedicated, selfless person with a passion for service to others. If you fit that description, I urge you to consider attending a local RecruitNY event this weekend, and if you are unable to join, just stop in and say thank you,” he added.

Further information, including the list of participating fire departments, is available online.
