Senator O’Mara shared his thoughts on Memorial Day in his weekly column, reflecting on the significance of honoring American soldiers who have died in service. He emphasized the importance of pausing to remember those who rest “in honored glory” for their devotion and service to the nation.
O’Mara highlighted various locations where Americans gather to observe Memorial Day, including Arlington National Cemetery and local sites like Woodlawn, Bath, and Romulus. He noted New York State’s recognition as the “Birthplace of Memorial Day,” with Waterloo in Seneca County playing a significant role since the Civil War.
Duane Mendenhall, director of both Woodlawn and Bath National Cemeteries, expressed that freedoms enjoyed today trace back to battlefields. He stated, “How can words suffice to honor our fallen veterans? We honor them by remembering they loved America.”
The column also included quotes from past presidents such as Ronald Reagan, John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, and Donald Trump. Each quote underscored themes of freedom, appreciation for sacrifice, and commitment to preserving liberty.
O’Mara extended thoughts and prayers to soldiers who have given their lives recently and acknowledged wounded warriors and active servicemen and women. He saluted New York State veterans along with millions nationwide for their contributions.
He concluded by affirming that America’s Armed Forces continue making sacrifices to maintain freedom at home while inspiring hope globally. The enduring spirit of this tribute is meant to ensure America remains strong and free.
