NY's COVID-19 Response Under Scrutiny for Lack of Transparency

Senator O'Mara's weekly column 'From the Capitol' -- for the week of April 1, 2024 -- 'NY's COVID-19 response still clouded in secrecy'

Senator O'Mara, along with legislative colleagues and advocates from "Voices for Seniors," gathered at the Capitol to reflect on the devastating impact of Governor Cuomo's March 25, 2020 executive order regarding nursing homes. Senator O'Mara expressed concern over the lack of urgency in conducting a thorough examination of New York's COVID-19 response, emphasizing the need for accountability and justice for the families affected.

Highlighting Governor Hochul's approach to investigating the state's COVID-19 policies, Senator O'Mara criticized the lack of independence in the review process. He drew parallels between Governor Hochul's in-house review and the controversial actions of former Governor Cuomo, pointing out the need for a transparent and impartial investigation to prevent similar mistakes in the future.

Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive and transparent investigation. He stated, "Thousands of families continue to mourn the loss of their loved ones in nursing homes due to the disastrous March 25th directive from former Governor Cuomo. They deserve the thorough, transparent investigation that was promised, not more inaction from their state government."

Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay also expressed disappointment in the lack of transparency surrounding the state's COVID-19 response. He highlighted the failure of the Reimagining Long-Term Care Task Force to address critical issues in New York's long-term care systems and nursing homes.

Senator O'Mara pointed out the ongoing efforts by Senate and Assembly Republicans to seek accountability through legislative hearings with subpoena power. He criticized the lack of checks and balances between the branches of government, particularly the absence of legislative oversight of the executive branch.

In conclusion, Senator O'Mara emphasized the urgent need for a thorough and independent reassessment of New York's COVID-19 response. He warned that without transparency and accountability, the state's future responses to public health crises could be compromised. The call for a transparent investigation continues as families and advocates seek closure and justice for the losses suffered during the pandemic.
