Washington, DC – U.S. Rep. Marc Molinaro's advocacy efforts have led to a significant change in the Social Security Administration's overpayment policy, which has been a burden on seniors and other Social Security recipients. The agency has announced a new approach to collecting overpayments, thanks to Rep. Molinaro's continuous pressure.
Rep. Molinaro highlighted the issue stating, "After fighting with the Social Security Administration for many months over their absurd policy, they have taken a step in the right direction by capping the collections, but there’s more to do. I’m still pushing for overpayment collections to be eliminated. Seniors should not go into debt because the Social Security Administration made a mistake."
The Social Security Administration had been making billions of dollars in overpayments to seniors and other recipients, causing financial strain when demanding the money back in full. However, following Rep. Molinaro's advocacy, the agency has adjusted its policy. Instead of demanding full repayment, they will now only collect ten percent or $10, whichever is greater, of a recipient’s monthly benefit to recover an overpayment. This change could save seniors and other Social Security recipients thousands of dollars annually.
While this adjustment is a positive step, Rep. Molinaro remains committed to pushing for further changes in the overpayment collection policy to ensure that seniors are not burdened by the mistakes of the Social Security Administration.
