Senator Tom O'Mara has shared his insights in his weekly column, "From the Capitol," for the week of December 23, 2024. As New York State approaches a new year, O'Mara reflects on the challenges and decisions awaiting both the Governor and Legislature. Key issues include education, economic development, energy and environmental conservation, health care, fiscal policies, immigration, infrastructure, public safety and security.

O'Mara emphasizes that as 2025 begins, there is a continued need for community and economic renewal across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions. He highlights the importance of regional teamwork to achieve common goals and priorities. "This teamwork will remain fundamental to our success and our ability to keep pushing forward," he states.

The Senator notes his experience representing the redefined 58th Senate District after legislative redistricting in 2022. The district includes Chemung, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Yates counties and part of Allegany County. He stresses that these communities share common strengths and goals: affordability, opportunity, stronger and safer communities.

O'Mara calls on the Hochul administration to better recognize regional needs for revitalization with clarity and fairness. He advocates for fairness and affordability as priorities in 2025 discussions with local leaders.

On legislative matters, O'Mara underscores hearing voices from small businesses to manufacturing as critical. Bipartisan discussions will be essential moving forward. "One way we stay together is by staying informed," he remarks.

Reflecting on the past year during this holiday season transition into 2025 brings gratitude towards those providing services across sectors enabling citizens to persevere towards a hopeful future.

"Let's all keep doing our part," urges O'Mara as he extends best wishes for a safe holiday season ahead along with hopes of strength leading into next year's endeavors.
