The UHS Neurosurgery team has completed its 50th Focused Ultrasound procedure for essential tremor, marking a milestone in the treatment of this neurological condition. The procedure, which is minimally invasive and uses sound waves guided by MRI, aims to treat the source of tremors without incisions or permanent implants.

Essential tremor affects about 2% of the population and is characterized by uncontrollable shaking that can interfere with daily activities such as cooking, writing, or driving. Many individuals remain undiagnosed or do not receive effective treatment. Some patients either do not respond to medication or experience decreased effectiveness over time. For these patients, Focused Ultrasound offers an alternative option.

“It is a profound experience witnessing firsthand the almost immediate, life-changing results this procedure has for patients,” said Simone Betchen, MD, MBA, chief of Neurosciences at UHS Neurosurgery. “Individuals who have been living with essential tremor and struggling to find a treatment that worked for them may have given up hope or felt they were out of options. Focused Ultrasound gives them a second chance to experience a life where they can return to doing the things that they enjoy doing on a daily basis.”

UHS is currently the only healthcare system in Upstate New York offering incisionless Focused Ultrasound treatment for Essential Tremor and Tremor-Dominant Parkinson’s Disease. Previously, patients needed to travel to cities like New York City, Boston, or Philadelphia for similar care. The technology used at UHS provides improved image quality and precision while reducing procedure times. The outpatient nature of the procedure eliminates hospital stays and anesthesia requirements.

“Reaching this milestone within the first year of offering Focused Ultrasound at UHS is a strong testament to the need for a truly life-changing treatment for essential tremor patients,” said Prakash Ramanathan, director of Clinical Operations and Neuroscience Services at UHS. “UHS is proud to be a leader in providing the latest and most advanced neuroscience technology and treatment options for patients in Upstate New York.”

Earlier this year, UHS shared patient Richard Kircher’s story about his positive outcome following Focused Ultrasound treatment.

The procedure is available without age restrictions and is covered by Medicare, New York State Medicaid, and most private insurers.
