Even as healthcare progresses, challenges remain for those living with or at risk of HIV and Hepatitis C. To address these issues, Zero HIV Stigma Day on July 21 and World Hepatitis Day on July 28 focus on raising awareness and eliminating stigmas associated with these conditions.
UHS is committed to providing accessible care for HIV/AIDS and hepatitis patients. The organization aims to reduce stigma through education and resources. At UHS Primary Care Binghamton, the HIV Care Team and Hepatitis C Program offer expert care supported by New York State grants.
The HIV Care Team provides advanced treatments, including injections every other month, moving towards an option requiring only bi-annual injections. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is also available for those at higher risk of contracting HIV. TeriAnn Montoya from the team stated that making treatment available through primary care has helped reduce stigma.
The Hepatitis C Program offers comprehensive care in a non-discriminatory environment. Modern medicine allows most patients to be cured after taking daily pills for 8 to 12 weeks. Melissa Barker emphasized the importance of free testing and community outreach.
UHS collaborates with organizations like the Southern Tier AIDS Program and local addiction centers to enhance access to care. Patients receiving PrEP or treatments typically face minimal out-of-pocket costs, with financial assistance programs available.
