A program at UHS continues to recognize the exceptional care and compassion of nurses with Jill Jochum being named the May winner of the DAISY Award. The award, which honors extraordinary nurses, was presented to Jill along with cinnamon rolls, a symbolic treat in honor of Patrick Barnes, whose experience inspired the award.

Jill Jochum, a nurse educator, was nominated by a colleague who praised her thoughtful and practical suggestions. The colleague highlighted Jill’s willingness to take on tasks beyond her responsibilities. Notably, Jill volunteered to revise and update all educational content for new graduate nurses, introducing innovative approaches to improve knowledge retention and clinical judgment.

“Her forward-thinking contributions will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on our Residency Program and, ultimately, patient care outcomes,” said her nominating co-worker. “Her collaborative spirit and proactive mindset make her an exceptional nurse educator and a valuable team member.”

The DAISY Award is an international recognition program that celebrates the skillful care provided by nurses daily. It was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died from complications of ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, his family appreciated the care shown to him and felt compelled to publicly thank nurses.

Started at UHS in April 2021, nominations for the award can be made by anyone within the organization who experiences or observes extraordinary nursing care.
