A nurse at UHS has been recognized for her exceptional care and compassion. Wella Gomez, a Home Care nurse, was named the June winner of the DAISY Award. The award acknowledges extraordinary nurses and their dedication to patient care.

Wella was nominated by the son of two patients she cared for. In his nomination letter, he praised Wella’s patience and kindness during medical appointments where she assisted with translating information. He described how Wella accommodated an unscheduled consultation for his mother, which left both parents grateful.

“My mom was thrilled! I was thrilled! She couldn’t stop saying bye and thank you to Wella,” said the son. “My Dad, who is older (and Asian), rarely claps his hands and bows down to younger people. He did just that to Wella. A very good sign that Wella did her job well.”

The DAISY Award is part of an international program recognizing nurses’ skillful and compassionate care daily. It was established by J. Patrick Barnes’ family after he passed away from complications of an auto-immune disease in 1999.

UHS started participating in this program in April 2021, allowing anyone within the organization to nominate nurses who provide extraordinary care.
