UHS is highlighting Lung Cancer Awareness Month in November by encouraging the community to focus on early detection and prevention of lung cancer. The organization notes that lung cancer continues to be the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, with more than 226,000 new cases expected in the United States in 2025. However, recent years have seen a decline in both incidence and mortality rates, attributed to improvements in treatment and early screening.
Trevor Flanagan, manager of Pulmonary Services at UHS, said: “Most people that have lung cancer don’t have symptoms in the early stages. Our goal is to screen as many high-risk patients as possible, find those asymptomatic nodules, and intervene and diagnose cancer earlier to treat and save lives.”
To support this effort, UHS will host a free public event focused on lung health at UHS Binghamton General Hospital on Tuesday, November 4, 2025. The event will run from 6:00 to 7:15 pm and feature a community discussion led by Deborah Giannone, an advanced practice provider specializing in respiratory therapy.
Attendees can participate in a Q&A session with Giannone and visit educational tables offering information about COPD support services, smoking cessation resources, and details about the ION Robotic Bronchoscopy Program. The event aims to inform participants about low-dose CT scans for early detection of lung cancer and provide guidance on who qualifies for screening.
The program is intended for adults who currently or formerly smoked, families and caregivers affected by lung health issues, as well as anyone interested in learning more about prevention strategies. According to UHS representatives, connecting individuals with screening opportunities can lead to earlier diagnosis when treatment is most effective.
