UHS Nephrology highlighted patient experiences and the importance of kidney health in recognition of National Kidney Month, according to a March 12 announcement. The observance aims to raise awareness about chronic kidney disease, which affects approximately 35.5 million Americans, many of whom may not know they have it.
Chronic kidney disease can lead to serious complications such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and kidney failure if left untreated. Early detection and effective treatment are essential for managing the condition and improving patient outcomes.
UHS Nephrology has served the Greater Binghamton area for over two decades, expanding its services to meet growing local demand. The practice now includes four board-certified nephrologists and four nurse practitioners across three locations: UHS Nephrology Binghamton, UHS Nephrology Apalachin, and UHS Nephrology Norwich.
Several patients shared their experiences with UHS Nephrology during National Kidney Month. Virginia Kipper of Binghamton said she values having expert care close to home after her successful kidney transplant at Upstate Medical in Syracuse in September 2024. “Dr. Quasem is one of the best. He’s upfront, easy to talk to, and keeps you informed,” Kipper said. “The office staff have been just as wonderful. When I have a question, they’re there to answer it. I can’t say enough about them.”
Mohammad Quasem, MD, emphasized the comprehensive care provided by the practice: “We follow patients through every step of their journey with kidney treatment,” Quasem said. “We have everything a kidney patient needs. There is no need to go anywhere other than UHS Nephrology.”
JoAnn Carter from Glen Aubrey described how transitioning to home dialysis improved her quality of life: “When I had to go into the clinic for my dialysis three or four days a week, I would come home exhausted,” Carter shared. “Now, I do my dialysis four times a week in the evening. During the day, I feel good. I can visit friends and family, and enjoy our home and pets.”
Michael Morosi of Binghamton credited UHS Nephrology with helping him manage his complex medical conditions more effectively than expected: “Dr. Quasem and the team have managed my heart, kidney, and blood pressure in a novel way so that my disease is progressing much slower than originally anticipated,” Morosi shared.
The number of patients choosing home dialysis at UHS has more than doubled over twenty years as more people opt for home-based care options supported by partnerships like Fresenius Kidney Care.
Patients expressed gratitude for dedicated providers who coordinate closely with other healthcare professionals when needed. Morosi added: “I know UHS Nephrology has my back… My experience with them couldn’t be more positive.”
As National Kidney Month continues each March, organizations like UHS Nephrology aim to increase awareness about early detection and accessible treatment options for those living with chronic kidney disease.
