Alix Hutchins has been named the September recipient of the DAISY Award at UHS, a recognition given to nurses who demonstrate exceptional care and compassion. The award was presented to Hutchins after being nominated by the spouse of a patient. According to the nomination letter, Hutchins was praised for her professionalism and attentiveness during the patient’s care.
The letter stated: “Her bedside manner and her concern for my husband was outstanding. She went above and beyond and never left his room until she was able to get his pain under control,” the spouse wrote. “She was open and honest to us about her concerns, and she kept us up to date every step of the way.”
Hutchins received cinnamon rolls as part of the award ceremony, which is a symbolic treat in honor of Patrick Barnes, whose experience inspired the creation of the DAISY Award.
The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem) Award is an international program established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died from complications related to ITP in 1999. The foundation aims to publicly thank nurses for their skillful and compassionate care.
UHS began participating in this program in April 2021. Nurses can be nominated by anyone within UHS—including patients, family members, colleagues, physicians, or staff—who witnesses extraordinary nursing care. Nominations are submitted through a form on nyuhs.org where nominators describe why they believe a nurse should receive recognition and identify which UHS Value—Compassion, Trust, Respect, Teamwork, or Innovation—the nurse displayed.
