On Thursday, July 17, UHS held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of 19 new private patient rooms at the UHS Wilson Medical Center Decker Emergency Department. This event celebrated the final phase of the UHS Wilson Main Tower project.
The expanded emergency department now features 45 private rooms, four trauma bays, and two surge areas, bringing the total bed count to 66. This expansion is seen as critical for allowing UHS to continue providing high-quality care as demand for emergency services grows.
Mark Medina, director of nursing at UHS, stated: “The new Wilson Main Tower Emergency Department has already proven to be a vital asset to our community.” He noted a sustained rise in patient volume of nearly 20% since its opening.
Patient experience scores have also improved significantly. Peggy Thomas, vice president of nursing and chief nursing officer at UHS, commented: “Based on the continuous growth of volumes that we see, UHS is the provider of choice within our community.”
The emergency department is dedicated to the Dr. G. Clifford & Florence B. Decker Foundation. The foundation’s support was instrumental in making this project possible.
John Carrigg, UHS President and CEO, remarked on the years of effort leading up to this milestone: “In reflecting on all the hard work that brought us to this milestone, I want to take a moment to appreciate all we’ve accomplished as a product of teamwork.”
Over 12 months, the Wilson Main Tower has redefined healthcare expectations in Greater Binghamton with improved access and groundbreaking medical innovation.
UHS remains committed to enhancing patient care and serving future generations.
