UHS opened Stroke Awareness Month with an event geared towards educating the public on stroke prevention and awareness. The event, held on May 1 at the UHS Vestal Salanger Outpatient Center, allowed members of the community to engage with UHS stroke experts. Participants learned about strokes, their warning signs, and risk factors.
The event featured free carotid screenings for 76 attendees. Community members also learned about proactive measures to reduce stroke risk, such as monitoring blood pressure and maintaining a healthy diet. They had the chance to familiarize themselves with rehabilitation equipment as well.
Explained in the event, stroke is a condition affecting the brain’s arteries. It occurs when a blood vessel carrying oxygen and nutrients to the brain is blocked by a clot or ruptures. The brain area affected by the stroke loses its blood supply, leading to the death of brain cells. Stroke ranks as the fifth leading cause of death and a major cause of disability in the U.S.
