State Senator Tom O’Mara and his Senate colleagues honored Leslie Church, Chair of the Yates County Legislature, as a 2025 “Woman of Distinction” at a ceremony in Albany. Church was recognized for her leadership and contributions to public service, volunteerism, and community development over nearly three decades.
Church began her career in local government in 2000 with an appointment to the Town of Milo Planning Board. She later became the first female Town of Milo Supervisor in 2011 and joined the Yates County Legislature. In 2022, she became the first woman elected as Chair of the Yates County Legislature.
O’Mara stated, “I am grateful and proud to have this opportunity to recognize and pay tribute to Leslie’s leadership and countless contributions to the quality and strength of Yates County. Her dedication has led her to a groundbreaking and stellar career in public service.”
The honor was part of the Senate’s 27th Annual “Women of Distinction” celebration, which included more than 60 honorees from across New York state. O’Mara selected Church to represent his 58th Senate District.
The Senate’s recognition program coincides with Women’s History Month and celebrates individuals for their significant accomplishments and contributions to their communities.
Church has worked on various initiatives as Chair of the Keuka Watershed Intermunicipal Cooperative and Vice Chair of the Keuka Outlet Compact. Her efforts focus on improving services for vulnerable populations, public health, social services, and community well-being.
In addition to her legislative work, Church is active in several organizations. She is a Master Gardener with Cornell Cooperative Extension and an MS Peer Advocate with Teva Neuroscience. In 2011, she was recognized by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society as an Inspirational Woman on the Move.
Previous honorees selected by O’Mara include Carol Berry, Virginia Houseknecht, Beverly Stamp, Lauren Snyder, Linda Thomas, Dawn Smith, Carmella Hoffmann, Kathryn Boor, Pauline Holbrook, Natasha Thompson, Nancy Kirby, and Melinda Marquart.
