Fatal Motorcycle Crash | Town of Fenton

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is currently conducting an accident investigation involving two motorcycles on Interstate 88 eastbound several hundred yards east of the exit for Port Crane in the Town of Fenton.  The accident resulted in one fatality of one of the operators.

At about 3:45pm today Sheriff’s Office patrols were dispatched to call of a multi-vehicle motorcycle accident on Interstate 88.  Responding emergency medical personnel and sheriff’s deputies located two overturned motorcycles and two injured persons; a 32-year-old male, later identified as Joshua Callahan of Halfmoon, NY, unresponsive, laying in the roadway and a 40-year-old male, identified as Radames Gonzalez of Plattsburgh, NY, alert and conscious, with non-life threatening injuries.  Lifesaving measures were administered to Callahan, however those efforts were ineffective and he was ultimately declared deceased.  Gonzalez was transported to Wilson Hospital for evaluation and treatment. As a result of the accident, debris and the investigation, the interstate was closed to traffic and a detour off exit 3 was established until about 6:00pm.

A preliminary investigation and multiple witnesses’ accounts indicate that a large group of motorcycles were traveling together eastbound on I-88. Callahan was operating a 1998 Kawasaki motorcycle in the passing lane when he entered a sweeping righthand curve in the roadway.  For an unknown reason Callahan left the lane of travel and struck the guardrail on the north side of the roadway causing him to lose control of the motorcycle. The motorcycle overturned and Callahan and motorcycle both slid across the pavement.  Gonzalez was also traveling eastbound operating a 2018 Honda motorcycle a short distance behind Callahan.  While Callahan was sliding across the pavement Gonzalez struck Callahan with his motorcycle which caused Gonzalez to lose control and lay down his motorcycle. Although there was heavy traffic and numerous other motorcycles, no other vehicles were involved. Both Callahan and Gonzalez were wearing DOT approved helmets.  Both of the motorcycles were towed from the scene.

At the time of this release accident reconstruction personnel are on scene taking measurements for the investigation and the highway is open to one lane of traffic.
