October is Pedestrian Safety Month
Unfortunately, pedestrian injuries and fatalities remain high. In 2020, 6,516 pedestrians were killed and an estimated 55,000 pedestrians were injured nationwide – that’s one pedestrian killed every 81 minutes. NHTSA raises awareness of the dangers to pedestrians and provides tips to keep pedestrians safe.
Safety tips for pedestrians:
Obey road signs and signals.
Walk on sidewalks. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic.
Cross streets at crosswalks or intersections.
Avoid using your smartphone while walking to avoid distraction.
Safety tips for cars:
Look out for pedestrians everywhere.
Use extra caution at night or in bad weather.
Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
Slow down around people on the street, especially in school zones and neighborhoods where children are present.
