Did Broome County students succeed or flounder in their 2021-22 school year English Language Arts tests?

Of the 9,557 students in Broome County who took the 2021-22 English Language Arts test, 27.7% met expectations and 14.7% did better than expected, according to the New York State Education Department.

In total, 42.4% of the students met or exceeded expections in Broome County, a decrease of 8.9% compared to the previous school year.

Within the county, Vestal Middle School students performed the best in English Language Arts, with 64% of them considered proficient in the subject. Meanwhile, Benjamin Franklin Elementary School students fared the worst, with only 10% passing the test.

The state registered an overall proficiency rate of 47% of students who met or exceeded expectations.

A 2021 report from the NYC Center for Innovation Through Data Intelligence found that outcomes for different racial and gender groups had improved since 2013. However, despite the improvements, significant gaps still persist, particularly among Black and Hispanic students.
