New York Lawmaker Emphasizes Urgency of Organ Donation During National Donate Life Month

New York Assemblymember, , emphasizes the importance of organ donation as the state observes 'National Donate Life Month.' He reflects on his personal connection to the cause, stating, "Since my first election back in 2010, raising awareness about organ donation has been a very personal issue to me and one of my top legislative priorities."

During a recent session on the Assembly floor, shared a significant statistic, saying, "One person who donates at the time of their death can save up to eight lives and impact the lives of 75 others." Despite improvements over the years, New York still faces challenges in organ donor enrollment. According to Donate Life New York, the state ranks 50th out of 52 states and territories in total organ donor enrollment.

With nearly 8,000 New Yorkers on the waiting list for a transplant, underscores the urgency of the situation, noting that in 2022, nearly 400 individuals in the state died while waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. He emphasizes the need for increased awareness and action, stating, "We can, and must, do better!"

Reflecting on legislative efforts to boost organ donor rates in New York, highlights the passage of 'Lauren's Law,' which requires individuals to address their organ donor registration status when applying for a driver's license.
