As March 30 marks Doctors Day in the United States, institutions and individuals nationwide take time to express gratitude to the medical professionals who dedicate their lives to improving and saving the lives of others. This observance, initially established in 1933 in Winder, Georgia, acknowledges physicians for their contributions to healthcare.

UHS, a prominent healthcare organization, recognizes its medical staff during this occasion, highlighting their commitment to patient care and the practice of medicine that aligns with UHS's core values. "We honor our physician colleagues, appreciating all that they do to provide knowledgeable care and service, create a consistently great patient experience, and live the Values of UHS in their practice of medicine all through the year," states a representative from UHS.

Doctors Day originated when Eudora Brown Almond sought to honor her husband and other physicians for their tireless work in the field. The first celebration involved sending greeting cards and placing red carnations on the graves of doctors, a tradition that persists today. Red carnations have since become emblematic of the holiday.

The commemoration became more formal over time. In 1958, the U.S. House of Representatives adopted a resolution to recognize Doctors Day officially. In 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed legislation to establish it as a national holiday after its passage through Congress.

In the spirit of appreciation, UHS encourages support of healthcare professionals through the UHS Foundation. Donations can be made in honor of a doctor, with the honored practitioner receiving acknowledgment of the contribution. "You can also help celebrate our healthcare heroes this Doctors' Day, by making a donation to the UHS Foundation in his or her name," the press release advises.
