Senator O'Mara honors Corning-Painted Post high school's athletic champions

State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C-Corning) visited Corning-Painted Post High School today to honor several of the school’s 2023-2024 New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) state champions. The event included athletes, family members, school administrators, staff, coaches, teachers, and students.

O’Mara and Palmesano presented official Legislative Resolutions honoring the state titles. These resolutions were sponsored by the lawmakers and approved by both the state Senate and Assembly.

In a joint statement, O’Mara and Palmesano said, “The Corning-Painted Post school district has a proud history of athletic excellence, competition, and achievement. We appreciate this opportunity to congratulate and pay tribute to several of the school’s state champions throughout the past year. It’s an opportunity to recognize and honor the dedication, excellence, hard work, and success of these remarkable student-athletes and their coaches. They represent inspiring stories and stand as a source of enormous pride to the entire Corning-Painted Post school district, as well as to their families and friends, the community at large, and our entire region.”

The recognized CPP state champions include:

- The Boy’s Bowling team won its first-ever state title by securing the Division 1 Bowling Championship on March 10 at AMF Strike N’ Spare Lanes in Syracuse. The resolution honored Head Coach William Condon and team members Cameron Kennedy, Camryn Stefanini, Peyton Nelson, Zach Sturdevant, Dante White, Maximus Aponte, and Bentley Goodier.

- Angelina McKane captured both the 50-yard Freestyle and 100-yard Butterfly titles at last November's Girls Swimming and Diving Championship meet. McKane was also awarded the Scholar Athlete Award and Outstanding Competitor Award by the New York State Certified Swimming Officials Association. She is committed to swimming in Division 1 at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

- Taylor Farrell won the 1500-meter Race Walk at the Division I Indoor Track and Field Championship on March 3. On March 8 at Boston's Reggie Lewis Center, she captured the New Balance Indoor Championship in the 1-mile Race Walk with a new meet record time of 7:05.14. Farrell will attend Suffolk University in Boston this fall.

- The Girls Varsity Softball team secured its first-ever Class AAA state softball title on June 8 at Martha Avenue Recreational Park on Long Island by defeating Section 5’s Fairport with an 8-2 scoreline in the championship game. The recognition extended to Head Coach Mike Johnston along with his assistant coaches and team members Maddie Payne, Kendall Curreri,

CPP Superintendent Michelle Caulfield stated: “As Superintendent there is no greater pride than seeing our students find their passion regardless of field or activity. These stellar student-athletes have found theirs and they have represented Hawk Nation well.”

CPP Director of Athletics Rebecca Gentile added: “We couldn't be prouder of our student-athletes' success this school year. Their hard work merits recognition."

CPP Varsity Bowling Coach William Condon remarked: "I am immensely proud of these young men for their victory in the state championship but even more so for knowing them."

Corning Boys' & Girls' Swimming & Diving Head Coach Alyssa Helsing commented: “Angie’s accomplishments are exemplary; she received All-American status."

Corning Boys' & Girls' Indoor Track & Field Coach Ray Lawson noted: "Taylor's technical race walking skills are extraordinary."

Corning Softball Head Coach Mike Johnston said: “‘Pressure is a privilege’ was our motto this season.”
