On August 19, 2024, Congressman Nick Langworthy announced that Alfred University will receive a federal grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) amounting to $347,740. This funding is designated for the acquisition of a state-of-the-art in-situ infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry system. The equipment is expected to significantly advance research in fields such as Ceramic Engineering, Glass Science, Materials Science & Engineering, Biomaterials Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

“I’m pleased to announce this significant investment in our Southern Tier students and the future of our region,” said Congressman Langworthy. “This new equipment will make Alfred University a leader in their research fields and will lay the groundwork for stronger industry connections, driving economic growth and attracting new business opportunities to our community. I’ll always work to bring home funding that supports education, innovation, and job creation in our district.”

Alfred University President Mark Zupan commented on the development: “With the addition of this infrared system to our existing setup, Alfred University will be the only institution in the region offering such a wide range of temperature and wavelength measurements, which will have a major impact on both our academic research and our industry partnerships. The grant will also provide incredible access to world-class equipment at the undergraduate student level while allowing for cross-cutting work featuring Alfred University’s unique capabilities in ceramics engineering and glass science. We are grateful for the support from Congressman Langworthy and the National Science Foundation that will help us to expand our impact, driving both educational excellence and regional economic growth.”

The NSF indicated that research projects facilitated by this instrument could potentially lead to significant technological advancements across various academic and manufacturing sectors. The NSF aims to award grants that foster research, innovation, and discovery as foundations for economic growth.
