Senator O'Mara has called on citizens to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming elections. In his weekly column, he emphasized the significance of voting as a fundamental right and responsibility. He urged those who have not yet voted early to do so on Election Day, November 5th.
Quoting historical figures, O'Mara highlighted the importance of participation in democracy. "We do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate," Thomas Jefferson once said. Similarly, Abraham Lincoln noted that "Elections belong to the people. It's their decision." These quotes underline the role of voters in shaping governance.
O'Mara referenced a recent poll from the Siena Research Institute indicating that over half of New York voters feel the state is headed in the wrong direction, with more than 60% expressing similar concerns about the country. A significant 75% consider this election crucial.
He stressed that post-election, it will be time for effective governance responsive to voter priorities. The Senator outlined goals for New York's future legislative session starting in January, focusing on public safety, affordability, and governmental reform.
"Someone struggled for your right to vote. Use it," Susan B. Anthony once said—a sentiment echoed by O'Mara as he encouraged citizens to let their voices be heard through voting.
