Assemblyman Joseph Angelino has announced that public libraries in Assembly District 121 will receive approximately $369,437 in state aid for construction projects. This funding is part of a broader allocation of $34 million from the FY2023-2024 State Budget aimed at enhancing library infrastructure and broadband capabilities.
The financial support will assist with various improvements such as roof replacements, alternative energy installations, new HVAC systems, and electrical upgrades. Libraries can also use these funds for broadband infrastructure projects.
Angelino expressed his satisfaction with the funding: “I am very proud to announce this funding for our Assembly District 121 public libraries. These funds will go a long way to help renovate our library buildings, upgrade their facilities and spaces and improve accessibility for everyone in the community.”
A survey indicated that New York state requires over $1.75 billion for library construction and renovation projects. Many libraries are outdated, with more than half being over 60 years old. Issues include inadequate space, energy inefficiency, and insufficient technological resources due to outdated wiring.
“I am looking forward to seeing these important renovation and improvement projects completed. Our public libraries deserve our care and support,” Angelino added.
Looking ahead, the FY2024-2025 State Budget has allocated $44 million for similar projects to be announced in summer 2025. This represents a $10 million increase from the previous fiscal year, highlighting ongoing support needs for libraries across New York.
