Senator O'Mara's weekly column, "From the Capitol," addresses ongoing challenges and issues in New York State. This week, he critiques Governor Hochul's recent State of the State message, which promises to make New York safer, healthier, cleaner, and more affordable. However, O'Mara argues that these goals are not being met due to high taxes and spending policies.
Governor Hochul stated: "We believe every family deserves to keep their hard-earned money in their pockets in a state they can truly be proud to call home." Yet, O'Mara points out that many New Yorkers have left for states with lower taxes and more opportunities. He criticizes the state's Democrat-led government for prioritizing higher spending and mandates that burden taxpayers.
O'Mara questions how Governor Hochul plans to change course when her agenda includes long-term commitments to increased spending. He believes this approach contradicts promises of tax relief: "You can't have it both ways."
The senator claims that New York has not become stronger or more affordable under one-party control. He anticipates no significant changes following the governor's proposed 2025-2026 budget. According to him, the affordability agenda will lead to higher costs and drive residents away.
As Ranking Member on the Senate Finance Committee, O'Mara will participate in public hearings on the governor's plan. These forums will examine the proposal with input from various stakeholders.
Senate Republicans aim to advocate for lower taxes and less regulation while addressing economic growth and job creation. Despite challenges within state government, they continue efforts against policies they see as detrimental to businesses and local economies.
