Congressman Nick Langworthy of New York's 23rd District recently held a roundtable discussion with the Western New York Restaurant Association. The meeting focused on the Trump Administration and House Republicans' tax cut plan, as well as other significant issues affecting the service industry.
Key topics included President Trump's Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) and the No Tax on Tips Act, both of which Congressman Langworthy supports. The group also examined Langworthy’s Energy Choice Act legislation, aimed at preventing states like New York from banning natural gas and other energy forms crucial for restaurant operations.
Participants in the discussion represented various local businesses such as Angry Buffalo, Johnson’s Landing, Magruders Pub and Banquet Hall, Anderson’s Custard, Glen Park Tavern, Symposium Wine Bar, Buffalo’s Best Catering, and Lancaster Coffee Company.
The Tax Foundation ranks New York State's tax system last on the 2025 State Tax Competitiveness Index due to high rates and burdensome regulations. A study by the National Federation of Independent Business in 2024 identified state taxes on business income, excessive government regulations, and federal taxes on business as major concerns for small business owners in New York.
“Our service industry is vital to the local community and restaurants are the heart of our small business economy. It is important to me to continue to hold events such as this one to discuss how the federal government can help, not hurt the hospitality industry,” said Congressman Langworthy. “The first step to finding common-sense solutions to the problems these businesses are facing is having a conversation, and that is exactly what we achieved here today.”
“The New York State Restaurant Association would like to thank Congressman Langworthy for meeting with us today. As the nation’s second-largest private-sector employer, the hospitality industry is vital to the national economy and our local communities. We welcome conversations like today’s about how national policies impact real small business owners trying to keep their doors open,” stated NYSRA.
