Assemblyman Joseph Angelino has expressed his support for the "Alexander John Smullen Traffic Safety Memorial Law" (A.3983) during a bipartisan press conference alongside colleagues from both the Senate and Assembly. The bill, introduced by Assemblyman Robert Smullen, is named in memory of Smullen's son, who died on March 6, 2024, after being struck by a vehicle on February 22, 2024.
The proposed legislation aims to allow families to purchase signs to memorialize victims of traffic incidents. These signs would serve as reminders of the dangers associated with distracted, reckless, or impaired driving.
Angelino stated: “I am proud to be a co-sponsor of the Alexander John Smullen Traffic Safety Memorial Law. This will allow friends and family to purchase road signs to honor their loved ones. There will also be the option to put a message on the sign to remind folks to drive safely and sober and to help prevent future tragedies. I will also support any piece of legislation that will help improve public safety, and this will do just that.”
The initiative seeks not only to honor those lost but also to promote safer driving practices across New York.
