Union-Endicott Central School District issued the following announcement on Dec 28.
As part of their work in the National Honor Society, UEHS junior and senior members participate in community service projects, often working to help a local agency or organization. This year, with the pandemic, it was a challenge to work in the same way students have in the past. That didn’t stop NHS president and UEHS senior Lucas Scalcione from finding a way the group could help others.
Lucas decided to use the pandemic and practicality as the center of his project, making and bottling hand sanitizers for the Children’s Home of Wyoming Conference.
Lucas said, “From the outside looking in, the world pandemic seems like the reason I chose this project, but it was more than that; I wanted to pick something that was practical in all circumstances.”
With that in mind, he researched making hand sanitizer. Then, after collecting small spray bottles he, and NHS adviser Tom Mullins, coordinated a schedule for members to come to the high school to make, bottle, and label the spray bottles. Because of health protocols, students were assigned different times to work in small groups in two different classrooms for a short period of time.
Students felt that people are more conscious of cleanliness now more than ever before. Lucas thought the children’s home was the perfect organization to donate to as one of its main goals is supporting and teaching underprivileged youth the importance of good behavior. He added, “Hygiene cannot be overlooked. To me, stellar hygiene habits are an important skill for any young person to learn.”
During the break, Lucas, along with Derick Donatoroberto and Alyssa Bowman as well as Mullins and UEHS associate principal Tom Bierworth, drove out to the home to donate 240 hand sanitizer spray bottles.
Thank you UEHS NHS for your work and generosity. Collaboration, community, care!!! #TigerPride
