Senator O'Mara's weekly column 'From the Capitol' -- for the week of April 15, 2024 -- focused on the importance of the annual “RecruitNY” campaign in addressing the recruitment and retention challenges faced by local volunteer fire departments in New York State.
John D’Alessandro from the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) highlighted the significant decrease in the ranks of volunteer firefighters over the past two decades, attributing this decline to challenges such as the turbulent economy and busy schedules. D’Alessandro emphasized the critical importance of initiatives like RecruitNY in safeguarding the future of the state.
Senator O'Mara echoed these sentiments, underscoring the indispensable role of volunteer fire departments in ensuring public safety and community service. He emphasized the need for prioritizing the recruitment and retention of emergency services volunteers as a statewide imperative.
FASNY's report shed light on the economic value of volunteer firefighters, estimating that they save taxpayers nearly $4 billion annually in New York State. The report also highlighted the potential financial implications of transitioning to an all-paid fire service, including a significant rise in property taxes statewide.
Despite the challenges, there are positive signs on the horizon. A recent survey by FASNY indicated a strong interest among New Yorkers in becoming volunteer firefighters, with a majority of respondents recognizing the crucial role played by these volunteers in ensuring community health and safety.
In response to the recruitment and retention challenges, Senator O'Mara, along with other legislators, has proposed the “Omnibus Emergency Services Volunteer Incentive Act” to provide tax and other incentives to support volunteer firefighters and EMTs.
Edward Tase, Jr., President of FASNY, expressed optimism about the enthusiasm shown by communities in answering the call for volunteer firefighters, indicating a potential for bolstering the ranks of emergency services volunteers in the state.
