U.S. Reps. Marc Molinaro and Pat Ryan have urged the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to prioritize further clean-up efforts in the Hudson River as the upcoming five-year review approaches. The EPA issues a five-year review report to assess remediation efforts at Superfund Sites and ensure the protection of human health and the environment. The lawmakers are calling for a 'not protective' determination in the report, which is necessary to initiate additional PCB clean-up in the Hudson River.

In a joint letter to EPA Administrator Michael Regan, Congressman Molinaro emphasized the importance of protecting the environment and ecosystems, stating, "Corporations dumped toxins into the river, then left us to deal with the environmental and economic aftermath." Congressman Ryan echoed these sentiments, highlighting the impact of General Electric's discharge of toxic PCBs on the health and safety of Hudson Valley families.

Tracy Brown, President of Riverkeeper, expressed concern over the inadequacy of the current clean-up efforts, stating, "the cleanup has not succeeded in protecting human health and the environment." Pete Lopez, Executive Director of Scenic Hudson, emphasized the need for the EPA to acknowledge the failure of the clean-up efforts and take immediate action to address the toxic pollution in the Hudson River.

David Toman, Executive Director of Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, emphasized the need for the EPA to issue a 'not protective' determination based on data indicating that the current clean-up remedy is not meeting the target PCB concentrations in the river. The lawmakers are pushing for additional remedial action to reduce exposure and risk at the Superfund Site.

The joint efforts of Congressmen Molinaro and Ryan reflect their commitment to fighting for clean water and environmental protection in the Hudson River. Their advocacy for further PCB clean-up is supported by environmental organizations, local elected officials, and residents across New York and New Jersey.

The upcoming five-year review presents an opportunity for the EPA to address the ongoing pollution in the Hudson River and take steps to protect the health and well-being of communities in the region. The call for additional clean-up efforts underscores the importance of prioritizing environmental conservation and safeguarding the Hudson River ecosystem for future generations.
