The National Weather Service has issued a severe weather advisory for this afternoon and evening as the remnants of Hurricane Beryl move through New York State. The combination of high temperatures and humidity is expected to result in severe thunderstorms, particularly in the Fingerlakes and Central New York regions. These storms are anticipated to bring high winds exceeding 60 mph.
Additionally, conditions are favorable for the formation of tornadoes. Residents are advised to seek shelter during severe thunderstorms and avoid exposure to the elements. Flying objects pose a significant threat during these storms; therefore, securing any loose items that could become projectiles is recommended to prevent injury or damage.
In the event of severe winds, it is advised to move to an interior room and stay away from windows. Power outages and downed trees are also likely occurrences during these storms. Downed power lines present an extreme danger and should be avoided at all costs.
"The best course of action during severe weather is to have a plan, avoid unnecessary travel, and seek shelter," stated Christopher J. Moss, Chemung County Executive.
