Today, Congressman Nick Langworthy announced that several fire departments in Erie County have been awarded federal grants through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) programs, totaling over $487,543.17. These funds will enhance fire response capabilities and support staffing and safety initiatives for first responders.
“These grants are a critical investment in the safety of our communities and the brave men and women who protect us,” said Congressman Langworthy. “Our first responders face significant risks every day, and these funds will provide them with the equipment and resources needed to carry out their duties safely and effectively, as well as provide for recruitment and retention efforts. I remain committed to supporting initiatives that keep our firefighters safe and our neighborhoods secure.”
Grants were awarded to the following departments:
AFG Grants:
- Village of Depew Fire Department: $32,879.04
- West Seneca Fire District: $62,641.90
- Scranton Volunteer Fire Company in Hamburg: $80,622.53
- Village of Angola: $67,428.57
- Village of North Collins: $91,971.13
SAFER Grant:
- Evans Center Volunteer Fire Co in Angola: $152,000.00
Earlier this year, Congressman Langworthy hosted a virtual seminar with FEMA officials to help local fire departments understand and prepare for the application process for these grants.
The AFG program, administered by FEMA, aims to enhance the safety and readiness of fire departments across the nation by providing funding for essential equipment, protective gear, and training. The SAFER program focuses on increasing staffing levels and retaining qualified firefighters to ensure departments can meet their operational needs.
