State Senator Tom O’Mara has expressed concerns following Governor Kathy Hochul's 2025 State of the State address, warning that despite efforts to tackle New York's affordability crisis, there are ongoing plans for increased state spending. O'Mara cautioned that such commitments could become unsustainable for taxpayers.
O’Mara noted that while Hochul is advocating for necessary tax relief, she is also pushing for significant increases in long-term spending. He remarked, "The governor can’t promise permanent, long-term tax relief at the same time she’s looking to continue spending taxpayer dollars and imposing mandates like there’s no tomorrow, and the governor knows it."
He further warned that this direction could result in challenging times ahead for taxpayers and businesses across New York. O’Mara stated, “New York State is not stronger, safer, saner, or more affordable under Governor Hochul and all-Democrat control of the Legislature."
O'Mara emphasized his commitment to collaborating with Senate Republicans to propose strategies ensuring upstate regions receive adequate attention. The Senate Republicans have introduced a "Liberate New York" agenda aimed at addressing public safety, economic growth, tax relief, regulatory reform, energy policies, and reversing population losses.
He also highlighted his intent to work with colleagues from the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions on issues like unfunded mandates and regulations affecting small businesses.
Governor Hochul is expected to present her proposed state budget next Tuesday. Following this presentation, O’Mara and other legislative members will begin public hearings on the budget as part of their oversight responsibilities.
