A program at UHS aimed at acknowledging the exceptional contributions of non-licensed nursing support staff has honored Diane Schaffer as the December recipient of the Sunshine Program Award. As part of her recognition, Diane received the Sunshine Award, sunflowers, and enjoyed cookies during a celebration.
Diane, a mental health technician on Krembs 3, was nominated by a colleague who praised her empathetic patient care and dedication to understanding patients with mental health concerns. The colleague noted that Diane approaches each patient with kindness and instills hope for their future. Additionally, they highlighted how Diane makes teammates feel valued and is committed to her profession, even missing a holiday party to complete recertification.
"Diane’s years of experience have helped her master the skill at building trust. During many shifts, patients have sought out Diane’s direct care because they trust her and can count on her for assistance in a non-judgmental way," said the nominating colleague. "Diane works hard to create a unit that is safe and does so in an honest, straightforward manner. She is respectful by being authentic and sincerely listening to patients as well as staff."
The award reflects Diane's embodiment of UHS values such as Respect, Teamwork, Innovation, Trust, and especially Compassion. The program allows patients, families, and colleagues to nominate any non-licensed support staff who exemplify these values. Nominations are accepted via paper kiosks and boxes at UHS locations or through email at sunshine.awards@nyuhs.org.
While all nominees receive recognition, one individual is selected monthly for special acknowledgment.
