Guthrie Clinic has launched its inaugural K9 Security Team in a move to enhance workplace safety. Officially initiated on April 11, the team features Echo, a German Shepherd, and his handler K9 Security Officer Jennifer Vaughn, who have completed a comprehensive training program. They are now operational at the Sayre, Pennsylvania campus and will work alongside existing security personnel across Guthrie’s facilities.
Echo, weighing in at 106 pounds, is trained to support security initiatives and provide a visible security presence. Officer Vaughn, with 27 years of experience in public safety, becomes part of the only K9 Security Program within a health system in the region served by Guthrie.
A survey by the American College of Physicians indicates that violence against emergency physicians has been widespread, with 91% reporting being a victim or knowing a colleague who was affected in the past year. Dr. Edmund Sabanegh, President and CEO of The Guthrie Clinic, mentioned that these issues are not exclusive to urban areas. "That's why we have been continually bolstering our security teams and enhancing our technical capabilities. This K9 team adds another layer," he said.
Echo’s primary role is safety, and he is not to be approached without permission from Officer Vaughn. While the team will participate in community events, their primary duties will be performed within Guthrie facilities. Plans are underway to expand the program with a second K9 team later this year.
Andrew Dunnick, Senior Director of Safety, Security, and Emergency Preparedness at Guthrie, expressed pride in the clinic's focus on safety. “We can point to multiple reasons for the alarming statistics across the country, but at Guthrie, we’re also focusing on solutions,” he stated.
In legislative efforts, Dr. Sabanegh recently engaged with lawmakers in Harrisburg to promote workplace safety. The clinic is also participating in the Respect and Heal campaign in New York, advocating for improved treatment and safety practices for healthcare workers.
