BROOME COUNTY: Prepares For Potential Christmas Flooding

Fema youth preparedness

Broome County issued the following announcement on Dec 24.

Broome County Officials are tracking a storm system that has the potential to cause serious flooding throughout Broome County.  Significant snow melt combined with 2-3 inches of rain from Christmas Eve to Christmas day could cause significant river flooding along with urban and small stream flooding. The National Weather Service currently has Broome County in a flood watch.

There is also a potential for strong winds which could cause scattered tree damage and power outages. A flash freeze may also occur on Christmas Day which could make travel difficult.

Broome County is also coordinating with local municipalities on storm preparation and response. A state of emergency is in place throughout the county and the county Emergency Operations Center will open up at midnight on Christmas to monitor and respond to the storm.

The county urges residents to monitor local news stations and to be prepared. Develop an evacuation plan with your family. Tips on how to make a plan can be found at www.ready.gov

Do not drive through flooded roads. Broome County encourages residents to monitor the weather forecast and road conditions frequently. A helpful tool to stay informed is NY Alert. You can register at alert.ny.gov
