On Tuesday, Congressman Nick Langworthy (NY-23) and co-lead Rep. Greg Landsman (D-OH) introduced the Make American Flags in America Act. The bill mandates that any American flag displayed on federal property or purchased by federal agencies must be entirely manufactured in the United States using American-produced materials.

The legislation aims to bolster U.S. manufacturing by increasing demand for domestic materials and labor in flag production, thereby supporting the economy and industries employing American workers.

Congressman Langworthy emphasized, “This is a no-brainer: American flags should be made in America.” He highlighted the symbolic significance of the flag as representing democracy, power, and glory, stating that ensuring economic benefits for American manufacturers is an appropriate way to honor these principles.

Rep. Landsman added, “The American flag represents so much—our nation’s history, and our future to come. It’s right that our flags be manufactured here in America.”

The bill has garnered support from several original co-sponsors including Rep. Rob Aderholt (R-AL), Rep. John Moolenaar (R-MI), Rep. Paul Tonko (D-NY), among others.

Support also comes from organizations such as the National Council of Textile Organizations, Flag Manufacturers Association of America (FMAA), National Independent Flag Dealers Association, and New York State Association of Counties.

Lauren VandenBosch, FMAA President, noted challenges from counterfeit flags mainly from China being sold misleadingly on e-commerce platforms to various government levels and consumers. She stated that this legislation would enhance awareness and enforcement within federal procurement agencies to ensure only "Made in America" flags are purchased.

Kim Glas, President and CEO of the National Council of Textile Organizations, expressed appreciation for Congressman Langworthy's leadership on this issue. She pointed out the detrimental impact of China's trade practices on the U.S. textile industry but affirmed confidence in fair competition when conditions are equitable.

David McGehee, President of NIFDA, supported swift passage of this critical bipartisan bill emphasizing its role in protecting jobs while upholding national symbols' integrity through genuine Made-in-USA products.
